Lake Mburo National Park
Location of the Park
Lake Mburo National Park is indeed Uganda’s smallest savannah park. it is located in the Masaka-Ankole dry cattle corridor.
The most interesting fact is that this park contains a high population of the not-so-common Eland cow and several other grazers.
There are no predators in this park and often safari game viewing is done while walking or horse riding or simply National Parks cycling!!!
Facts about the Park
The park is the smallest of Uganda’s Savannah national parks at 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). The lake that is located in this region bears the name Lake Mburo National Park.
Its sculpted terrain of undulating hills and picturesque lake beaches features a diverse mosaic of habitats, including rich acacia-woodland, seasonal and permanent marshes, and grassy valleys, all of which sustain an abundance of animals.
Due to its proximity to the equator, the area experiences bimodal rainfall, with the long rains taking place from February to June and the short rains from September to December.
Biodiversity in the Park
A total of 68 mammal species, including several Impalas (the antelope from which “Kampala” is derived), plains zebras, Uganda kobs, duikers, bushbucks, topis, buffaloes, leopards, spotted hyenas, Defassa waterbucks, warthogs, and oribi, are present in this small park. 315 different bird species exist.
The predominant vegetation is an open savannah with acacia, Olea, and Boscia trees. The Lake Mburo National Park is a refuge for wildlife and plants. Animals and birds are abundant on the riverside. Buffaloes come to drink during the dry season, and crocodiles and hippos live there year-round.
Bird watching in the Park
The park chiefly boasts a diverse array of resident birds, including finfoots, malachite kingfishers, African fish eagles, Rüppell’s long-tailed starlings, blue-headed coucals, tambourine doves, hammerkops, pelicans, herons, cormorants, and even the endangered shoebill.
The Masaka-Mbarara Road connects Kampala with the park. The trip to Lake Mburo National Park takes roughly four hours.

Jungle Safari
A is an overland journey, usually a trip by tourists to Africa. In the past, the trip was often a big-game hunt, but today, safari often refers to trips to observe and photograph wildlife—or hiking and sightseeing, as well.
The Swahili word safari means journey, originally from the Arabic meaning a journey; the verb for “to travel” in Swahili is kusafiri. These words are used for any type of journey, e.g. by bus from Nairobi to Mombasa or by ferry from Dar es Salaam to Unguja. Safari entered the English language at the end of the 1850s thanks to Richard Francis Burton, the famous explorer.
The Regimental March of the King’s African Rifles was ‘Funga Safari’, literally ‘tie up the March’, or, in other words, pack up equipment ready to march.
In 1836 William Cornwallis Harris led an expedition purely to observe and record wildlife and landscapes by the expedition’s members. Harris established the safari style of journey, starting with a not too strenuous rising at first light, an energetic day walking, an afternoon rest then concluding with a formal dinner and telling stories in the evening over drinks and tobacco.
