- Elephants, buffalo, and several different small antelope species can be found on Mount Elgon’s lower slopes. Primates like the black-and-white colobus monkey and the blue monkey can be found in the deep highland forest. Over 300 different bird species live in the park, including the lammergeier and the Tacazze sunbird.
- The lush montane forest is located between 2000 and 2500 meters above sea level and is made up of over 100 different species as well as epiphytic orchids, ferns, and trailing lianas.
- The zone of mixed bamboo and podocapus (3000–3500 meters) contains the most biodiversity on the mountain, along with the forest.
- The slopes of Elgon are home to a diverse range of vegetation, from montane forest to high open moorland dotted with enormous lobelia, groundsel, and heather plants. Elevation affects the vegetation differently. Elgon olive trees line the mountainside.
- There are 296 bird species in the Mt Elgon National Park, including 40 Ugandan species with a range that is only found there, such as the black-collared Apalis, Jackson’s Francolin, Lammergeyer, Black-shouldered Kite, and Tacazze sunbird.

- The world’s largest volcanic base is located at Elgon. It is also the oldest and biggest isolated volcanic peak in East Africa, and it is situated on the Uganda-Kenya border. Its enormous form, which has an 80km diameter, towers more than 3,000m over the nearby lowlands.
- Mt. Elgon is a volcanic mountain that was created through the process of vulcanicity, in contrast to Rwenzori Mountain, which is a block mountain.
- Elgon is surrounded by a series of rough rocks, and its 40-kilometer-long crater lake is located at the summit. The Uganda-Kenya boundary runs right near Mount Elgon National Park.
- A network of salt-filled tunnels can be found carved out of Mt. Elgon’s slopes. Wild elephants frequent these caverns, gouging the cave walls with their tusks to taste the salt that has been exposed.
- With an average annual rainfall of more than 1,270mm, the climate is moist to moderately dry. Although it can rain on the mountain at any time of the year, the dry season lasts from June to August and from December to March.
- At the border between Kenya and Uganda is the extinct volcano Mount Elgon. Wagagai, the highest peak at 14,178 feet (4,321 m), is located within the crater, which is about 5 miles (8 km) in circumference.
